940 Wagon - Faulty Fuel Gauge or Wiring??? 900

the saga of the inop 1995 940 fuel gauge continues...

Today (with my temporary radiator fix working) I headed to radio shack to pick up a 68 ohm resistor and a multimeter. Dang radio-shack doesn't have any 68 ohm resistors. I took the next best thing, a pack of 47 ohm resistors 1/2 watt. and a cheapo multimeter. Armed with the 960 fuel gauge pdf file, I unhooked the battery negtive and tried to find my sender unit wiring connector (hint, it's not in with the tank access panel). Found it in my driver's-side rear storage compartment - after I opened the tank access.

My sending unit connector is not exactly like the 960, it has a cluster of four - black (ground), grey/white (sender), Red and a brown one (I think). I reconnected the battery, hooked the resistor between black and grey-white, turned the key and....

NOTHING happens.

So I'm think too small a resistor? poor contacts? I stick 1, then 2 more in there, still nothing at the gauge. I carefull insert it to be sure that it is making contacts, still nothing. I remove the cluster, and ext temp display, use a bit of wire to kick the needle over the stop, try again and the needle once again rises to the stop (even with NO signal from the sender - it's disconnected!!) I try same with the resistor(s) in and same behavior.

I put it back the way it was and turn the key, I still get a little jump at the gauge, but nothing above empty.

So here are my questions:

It is the wrong resistor? According to the pdf 68 was supposed to mimic a 1/4 tank 0-280 ohm range. s 47 ohm should have just given me a very low reading, right?

Does this soudn like a gauge problem? I can't quite figure out how to test it with the MM, the 960 pdf file is not quite specific enough. what do I need to do to be sure that teh sending unit is sending a resistance?

How do I check the wiring continuity? What can I do to make sure that sending wire inside the harness hasn't gone bad?

Any additional help is appredicated!
Jack

-edit-
I also put the resitor between the grey-white and brown wires with no effects.
Am I even doing this correctly?
