Throttle surge on cold starts 700

Hello,

I just got a 740 GLE (non turbo) a few months ago and I am trying to troubleshoot a cold start problem. What happens is on cold start, the car is very sluggish, sometimes bucks, and has trouble getting up to 3500rpm. After 3500rpm it starts responding until it shifts and it's a dog again. However, once the car warms up, everything is OK.

Last weekend I replaced the engine harness and the mass air flow sensor. Apon restart the problem went away (might have been a fluke as the car may have been warm) but after a restart, it came back. Though, with the new MAF the car runs better than what it was with the old one.

To me it seems like the car is running rich, as I can get it up to speed if I lift on and off the throttle, or press lightly on the throttle. If I press it too far, it will backfire. Also, the exhaust smells of gas.

How does the air by pass screw on the MAF work? I was thinking of trying that, also I was going to clean the throttle body. (It's pretty dirty.) Does anyone have any other ideas?
