Replacing head gasket (& associated other gaskets in process) on '84 240GL 200 1984

Hi all,

I will soon be replacing the leaking head gasket on my Australian 1984 240GL. I have ordered the Bentley manual online from the states to guide me through the process. I was wondering about gasket sets I have seen advertised on IPD and elsewhere, as in what specific set I should be looking at. One of the local auto parts suppliers quoted me a price of $165 (AUD) for a "valve re-grind set" which is supposed to include all the gaskets & seals required. When I asked if they couldn't do any better, I was told they could get a set for $90 but it was "European". Will this work on my volvo? It has a B23E engine in it.

Additionally, I was wondering what other things I should be looking at servicing during the process. I intend to replace the timing belt, also I have already received advice on replacing the heater hoses under the intake manifold. Obviously flushing and refill of the oil and coolant will be taking place. The water pump was also very recently replaced. I don't have a lot of money to spend on it at the moment, but I really want to get the car running well again and keep it that way for a long time yet, so I'm willing to scrimp and save etc. to get what's needed to restore the engine to good order.

Thanks,
Charles
