wagon's rear wiper arm wont stop in correct position 200 1990

dear brickboard,

my rear windshield wipers on my 1990 240 DL wagon no longer stop in the home position. instead they will stop in seemingly random positions along the wiping path.

i suspect i have a problem with the wiring where it snakes through the hinge of the tailgate. a few years ago the wipers stopped working and that was the problem.

does anyone have advice on this problem and perhaps an explanation on how the wipers know where to stop? please advise. thank you.
