gotta replace O/D solenoid or clean it out and try again....what to clean with? 200 1986

hey there, i've traced my O/D problem down to the solenoid....good relay, good wiring, good power.....no O/D still... this is an automatic tranny by the way, but before i have to try and track one down i'd like to clean it out really well and see if that makes any difference. has anyone done this before? i hear they get gunked up and thats a main reason why they stop working... what should i use to clean this? chemicals? gasoline? Thanks
