'88 245 - Cold engine starts and then stalls out on first try... 200 1988

The subject says it all... My '88 240DL WAGON has some starting issues.

When the car has been sitting for a while I'll turn the ignition, the engine will catch and start, but then immediatley die.

On the second try the engine fires right up and stays running every time!

I'm thinking faulty fuel line back flow valve?
