Need everybody's advice on new car for spousal unit

This isn't a Volvo question. I've got a '91 240 (daughter's) and an '89 765 Tic (mine!) that I love. Unfortunately, I also have a '91 MB 300TE 4matic with 265k that needs to be retired. I'm asking this question on this list because I consider this a huge resource in terms of car-savvy, mechanically adept folks who know a lot more collectively than I do individually.

What say y'all about the best 2-4 yr old cars to upgrade to? I'm looking for 4 doors, fun to drive, and 240/740 durability. OK, I know I can't have the last one, but that's my benchmark. I'm almost totally ruling Volvo out because of what I'm hearing with the ETM's ($1000 to replace, last about 80 k if you're lucky) and Volvo's foolish screw-you no-warranty position.

So let me hear what you think. I've got time to look and I want to make a smart decision. The 300TE was a great car but MB is now making expensive Chevys (read about DBAG in the financial section, Chrysler is carrying the company in terms of profits because of the quality problems at MB).

Thanks for any and all input.
