Brake/ABS failure 700

My wife told me that the brakes on our 88 740 Turbo Wagon (5 spd) didn't work. I took it out this evening and found that when I pressed the pedel the ABS would start pulsing but the car would not stop. I released the pedal and hit it hard again. The ABS fault light came on and the brakes started working perfectly (although without the ABS.) I'd rather not have ABS then have the risk of faulty ABS not letting me stop the car. I don't beleive the system has an adequete "fail safe". How do I disconect it?
