This is my first post....I am a newbie.
First, the 'ticking' sound is of medium speed. Not like a rod tapping sound.
Second, the valves, springs, & tolerances have all been checked.
Third, the ring gear (automatic) has been checked for those pesky rivets that can come loose. There was one rivet (or pin) that was loose. It was tightened. I also understand that many Volvo's valvetrain sometimes sound like a sewing machine. I have heard this sound and the 'ticking' sound is much different.
Here is my diagnosis. When the cars' engine is cold. No ticking sound. Idling after warmup, there is no ticking sound. AFTER the car is driven ANY distance, I can stop and put the transmission in park or neutral and the ticking sound is immediate. Placing the transmission in reverse or drive, the ticking sound stops cold. When accelerating, hard or normally, no ticking sound. After acclerating and then decelerating (just taking foot off of gas) there is a ticking sound, but much faster. As if in sync with the engine rpm's or valvetrain rpm's.
My mechanic (who only works on Volvo's) kept the car for 2 days. He is 110% sure that it is not coming from the crankshaft or connecting rods.
Recent events:
Took my car for an oil change and with that I get a standard brake, suspension check. They told me that my RH motor mount was bad. I haven't visually verified this...but I will on Saturday.
Does ANYONE have any idea what this pesky sound could be. I am driving the car...with a wreckers number in my wallet just in case.
Thanks to anyone who can help,
Jessie
