Wagon seat back release 200 1989

Have two '89 240 wagons, both have busted seat back release handles.

Mechanism seems to be crap. Most that I see in the boneyard are also broken; I tried removing one and found it a real PITA - and one small plastic attachment stud broke on that one too.

Any tips on this??
Can I swap in one of the sturdier ones from an earlier year?
(Our '86 has a different design release)

Or is it better to stick a big knob on the thing somehow, to give you something to grab onto??
