wobble when using brakes...rotors? or suspension? 700 1991

Hello board,
I've been driving a '91 740 wagon for about 3 or 4 days now, and I'm noticing a pretty good shimmy or wobble when applying the brakes. It's less noticible at high speeds, but definately still there.

Another strange thing, my automatic shift lever will move back and forth when accelerating quickly or applying the brakes. Normal behavior for this car & vintage? It had a new tranny put in about 3 months ago by the previous owner.

The brake pads seem to have plenty of life left in them, and are showing even wear all around. The rotors aren't pretty but seem to be free of any big gouges, etc.

Is there a clear cut way to pinpoint the problem to the rotors / pads / suspension / etc.? I'm really enjoying working on this car, and I'd love to avoid taking it to a shop.

thanks,
Michael
