Don't be scared girl freind:(but you should be)
The distibutor carries electrical current from the coil to each cylinder via the distributor cap, and rotor button, the center point inside the cap rests on the center of the rotor button as the cam turns the rotor button, power comes from the coil thru the cap to the button and as it turns, it distributes that current to each point on the cap( out on the outer edge of the button) which in turn sends the juice to each spark plug, so that they may fire the spark plugs and send you on your merry way.
