Sorry if this is long. There's a lot going on here. Or maybe just a little. I don't know.
I searched the archives for about an hour because I think this came up not too long ago. But I wasn't interested at the time because I haadn't bought the wagon yet and now, of course, I can't find the thread.
I noticed this last evening on my '89 wagon. When the engine is running, the center brake light is on even thought the brakes are not applied. When I remove the center light fixture and move it around the bulb goes out. Put it back in and it's on again. It must be a wiring problem. Still with the engine running, when I step on the brake pedal and the outboard brake lights come on and the center light goes off.
With the motor not running all three brake lights come on with the pedal like they should. But so do all of the idiot lights (except the high beam indicator) only just dimly. In addition to this, when I push the brake pedal in I can hear several relays clicking on. When I release the brake pedal I can hear them clicking off. So by listening around and feeling various relays I have identified three that are exhibiting this behavior.
They are, from what I can dope out in Bentley and the parts quick reference: The "Heater timer (and rear window)" relay which has the #1342675 and is found up under the dash on the far left; The power window relay which has part # 1235893 and is found behind the center console under the ventilation ducts; And what Bentley calls the "Main relay-B230F" which I believe is the LH system main relay and bears no Volvo part # but is made in Hungary and has a trademark that vaguely resembles a dollar sign in a circle. This one is found right in front of the ICU as you look at it under the dash on the passenger side.
Are you still with me? Okay, here's what they do. Depress the brake pedal and all three relays click. Release the brake pedal the heater and window relay click but the LH relay is silent for a while. After a minute or so I can hear and feel it click. If I press and release the pedal several times the heater and window relay will click on and off several times and then stop clicking even though I am still pumping the brake. Wait a few seconds, deperess the pedal again and they start clicking again. As I said, all this is occuring with the engine off. Start the engine and things seem to be normal except for the third brake light situation.
In my mind the brake light problem is tied to the strange relay behavior, I guess because it all has to do with stepping on the brake pedal. But I really don't know if the two conditions are related or what is causing any of this. I do know I want to get it fixed and I don't have a clue as to where to begin.
