Idle System - Operational Design? 700 1989

'89 760T - Idle is relatively smooth and stable; however, when the engine is cold -- just after starting it -- if the throttle is pressed -- the idle will jump from about 900 rpm -- up to 1200 rpm. It then cycles down normally from this point to 750 rpm as it warms up. On the other hand, if the throttle is not pressed, it starts cold at about 900 rpm and cycles down to 750 rpm.

This (fast idle) condition does not exist if the car is warm, nor does it exist unless I press the throttle after cold starting.

My question (related to idle) is how does the ECU and it's related sensors, etc normally operate (under various conditions) by design?
