Belt size excluding A/C compressor? 700 1987

My A/C compressor sounds like it has a bad bearing and I thought I would just remove it for now until I can find a good replacement. I won't be needing A/C for a few months anyway -- and here in New Hampshire it's generally useful only between noon and 3 on August 12 ;-)

The question is, how do I get the right size belt to use while the compressor is gone? Currently the belt drives the water pump as well, of course.

If I just measure the diameter of the pulleys on the engine and the water pump and the distance center-to-center is that enough to find the right size at NAPA or wherever? I've only ever purchased belts by standard application; are they available by length too?

Thanks!
