Yeah, I'm understanding what you're talking about now with making your own housings and what not. The filter area and pressure drop would be much better with the Corolla K&N filters on there, but they'd still be getting hot air. Even if I made a custom heatshield(I have HIF6s by the way, so the shields are a little different when compared with the HS6s and they don't suffer from boiling fuel as much either), I'd still be drawing in hot air just from sucking it in from the engine compartment, and the air coming from behind the radiator isn't as cold as it could be either, that's why I like my setup. The CAI is also less prone to detonation with the cooler intake air, but yeah, could actually be making less power, and have less throttle response and what not. And sadly, I did not install the phenolic spacers when I tossed these carbs on... I really regret that now... But I didn't have enough gaskets and since then I've sold the spacers along with some other HIF6s and heatshields I sold on ebay... :-\

A custom heatshield anyway though sounds pretty cool. And maybe even putting the Corolla filters on... It'd sound damn good at least, but money talks and it'd cost me money. By the time I do that though, I think I'm leaning towards getting the car megasquirted, and have headwork and get a new cam and my bottom end redone first. Bigger benefits lol.
