1990 740 Starting problems, ignition

Have you checked for fault codes? They may offer a clue to the problem.

I have the same car and experienced the same sort of intermittant starting problem a few years ago. I found that seperating the coil from the power stage portion and then removing the power stage from the chassis mount revealed some oxydized/dirty connections and grounding. Cleaning everything up and rubbing a tiny bit of dielectric grease on all the mating surfaces and connections cured the problem.

Good luck. (Don't feel bad. Our 740 with only 145,000 miles sounds like it's about ready to let a rod fly. Every day I'm waiting for "the phone call".)
