High Output Coil 140-160

Hello,
This winter the three 140 series cars that my family is running all have a problem with a "soot like substance" on the plugs and coming out the exaust. I cant get them to run any leaner ( two with SU's one Weber)? All of them get to the point that they run extreamly rough and have sporatic missing symptoms, and wont run properly until I clean the plugs. It has been a cold winter up here in London Ontario, but I have been running these cars for a number of years without this problem. Is it possible that a high output coil might help remedy this situation?
