Fuel pump making noise! help! 200 1982

I start my car then wait like about 10-20 seconds and a faint noise starts coming from the main fuel pump. then a few more seconds later, it make an even greater noise, like a rattling noise. Is my fuel pump meeting its end? I'm suspecting that the prepump is'nt working properly. I tested the prepump outside of the car with a sepret battery and it was runing pretty good. How can I test it mounted inside the car?
