142 starter 140-160

Jim,
My $0.02 on this....
While Matt and George may be in disagreement about technical detail concerning this task, I did not have a problem replacing my starter last year.

I have a 71 142E and the starter completely failed last year. I disconnected the power wiring and then the 2 large bolt, and then the thing fell on my garage floor.( much to my displeasure)

I took it to autozone and the guy tested it and said that it was drawing 1,000,000 amps and was definately bad.

I bought a new one for $70 and put the 2 bolts back in and off I went.

Perhaps you have a different unit, but I had no problem.

Jeremy
