Mileage Question - Better Mileage During First Half of Tank 700 1990

Filled up the tank and got 185 miles during the first half. Reset the trip odometer at half-tank and got to 130 miles, when I refilled with the needle deep in the red.

Driving pattern was the basically the same for the entire tank (40 mile daily roundtrip commute on the highway). I'm curious about the difference in the mileage for the two halfs of the tank. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this indicative of a larger problem?

Any guidance/advice is appreciated, thanks!
