Strut Bellows 700

I just had my struts replaced on my 745 by an indi mechanic that I've been going to for quite some time. I noticed that he did not replace the bellows. I asked about this, mentioning that I thought they kept dirt out of the strut insert, and wondered if not having them would effect the longevity of the strut insert. He answered no. I find this interesting since all of the repair manuals I have for all of my Bricks say to replace the bellows when they are torn or otherwise damaged. Can I trust the indi or is it time to find a new one?
