Draining trans fluid 900

Anyone ever drained the trans fluid from the torque converter in a 960/90 series? My indi said that there's a small plug that can me removed. He said that he does not like to flush the trans thru the trans lines as it could result in damage to the front trans pump (whatever that is) and that the safest way to service the trans is to drop the pan, drain the torque converter, install a new filter and fill with new fluid.

I'll do some research but this is the first time I've heard of draining the trans like this.
