Grinding Noise From Drive Shaft/Differential 900

My '95 965 makes a grinding noise and slow speeds (forward and reverse) and rumbles and vibrates at higher speeds. My mechanic thought is was caused by a loose transmission mount since the bolts were very loose. He tighted them, but the noise returned. The tranmission mount was replaced, no luck. He put the car on the lift, but we couldn't duplicate the noise. He now thinks the cause could be worn rear shocks which are causing a mis-alignment between the shaft and the differential. I remember reading a post about this sometime late last year. I couldn't find anything in the 900 FAQs. Any other ideas?

Regards,

Tom O. in Charlotte '95 965 w/125,000 miles
