Idle Air Solenoid function? 700

Since we've determined that keeping the worn B230FT motor in the car is not in our immediate plans,, I've been playing with removing some parts on my 88 765T and noticed that when I removed the idle air solenoid from the intake and blocked the ports, resetting the idle stop and idle adjustment; The car runs fine. I took it for a short drive and there did not seem to be a great deal of difference in performance, if any. Does anyone know for certain what the idle air solenoid is for?

Regards,
