In Tank Pump Question 200

I am trying to determine if the in-tank fuel pump is running and can't really tell and I don't want to remove it if it is not neccessary. When I remove the fuse to the in-tank pump, the main pump does not get any louder and I sure can't hear the prepump using a rubber pipe to the tank or in the fuel filler. Is there another quick way to determine if the in-tank pump is OK and running ? Is it ok to disconnect the fuel hose to the main pump from the gas tank and crank the engine to see if the In-Tank pump is working ?
