Maintenance questions by a new owner 200

Hello brickboard users, my name is Jim and I just bought my first Volvo this weekend, a 1989 240DL wagon. It has 179K miles and a 5-speed trans. Part of what I like about used cars is getting to know them mechanically and learning to do as much of the maintenance as possible, so I've already purchased a Haynes manual and I'm getting ready to do a good tuneup. One question that has come up is: in the owner's glove-compartment manual, it states that both the manual transmission fluid and rear differential fluid are not intended to be replaced after the initial 1200 mile replacement. Since I intend to get many more miles out of this car, my inclination is to replace the fluids; it just doesn't seem like these should go unchanged for 200K miles or more. Any suggestions/thought would be greatly appreciated!
