240 odometer problem / cluster removal 200 1987

Neither the trip or regular odometer on my 1987 240 DL is working. The trip stopped working some months ago but now the regular odometer has stopped as well. I can't find in the forums how to remove the instrument cluster, to get at the speedometer. If I could get it out I could determine what to do with the help of the forums. Is there an exchange option for a rebuilt speedometer with functioning odometers. If one rebuids it oneself, what site offers new gears(s)? My Haynes manual simply says to remove the steering column surround to get at the cluster. I can't see how this would work. Thanks for your patience, I probably am overlooking something simple.
