85 240 Speedometer Trouble 200 1985

Howdy!

I recently bought my 3rd Volvo and love it. It is an 85 240 wagon. I would like to fix up the speedometer if it's not too much trouble. It just doesn't work, along with the odometer. I checked the wire that leads to the guage and it is disconnected. The wire does spin when the car is moving. When drive and connect the spinning wire to the appropriate spot on the guage, the needle just bounces around, not getting much past 10 mph. What's up?
