volvos and kids 200

I grew up driving around in Volvos. My parents bought a 244 new in 1987 and was passed along to me. I drove it until it was totalled (sadly) by another driver at 233K. My dad also had an 81 245 which was later sold. I remember always having a feeling of being safe and at ease in those cars. And I became very attached to them as a result.
In my search for a new 240 (I bought a 93 244), my dad and I came across many owners whose kids were very skeptical of somebody coming to drive their mom or dad's Volvo. One kid asked his mom what I was doing there. She replied, "He's going to look at pappy's Volvo." The child replied "No!" Another time, another kid started to cry when he realized somebody might buy the family Volvo.
So what's up with kids becoming attached to Volvos? Is it the feeling of safety and ease that I felt (and still do) as a child?
