Running rich, joint sealing compound? 900

I just posted this to an older thread about someones need for an explode engine diagram.

Upon reading the info from 2.9L 6cyl. there is a procedure for reinstalling the exhaust manifold, and down pipe, using new gaskets for the head connection and using Joint Sealing Compound #1-161-035-9. Any body know what this is, and how is it used?

I have been trying to chase down a rich running engine, everything checks out fine, ie. coolant temp sensor, O2 sensor, MAF sensor, good spark plugs. An exhaust leak would cause the ecm to run rich. I am thinking now that the problem might be a combination of tired/poor functioning fuel injectors and an exhaust leak. This compound called for on the manifold to head and for the connection to the down pipe. Have never used the stuff, never knew that it may be required. Wondering if that may be my problem?

The engine has just over 43K on it, last emissions test with new O2 sensor, and new OEM convetor, just barely passed with high HCs. Now every 10K miles or so the plugs get carboned up. A light shined down into the spark plug hole shows that the top of piston 1 is thickly caked with carbon, number two has some build up, the balance have a coating of carbon. I just replace the No.1 injector and will send out old one for a physical and cleaning. I do not have the time to do all at once, the car needs to be on task. I also suspect that the convertor has stopped working, the smell of the exhaust has that acrid odor, not the same when everything was new. Compression and leak down are at the best possible specs.

Maybe it is not sealing correctly?

What are all your thoughts?
