Interior Rear View Mirror 1973 1800 1800 1973

OK, So I bought a replacement housing for a 73 1800 ES Interior Rear View Mirror KIT as mine was crumbling. It came with the plastice housing, mirror glass and the DAY/NIGHT knob. It however did not come with instructions. Getting the mirror assembly off was easy. Grab at the top of the arm at the ceiling head liner and pull. Comes off quite nice.

To disassemble the old housing, you need to first pop off the old mirror glass from the old plastic housing. Wedge a thin knife and pry gently. It will come out easily.
Now comes the interesting part of the disassembly. You will notice that the swivel ball passes through the rear of the housing and runs through two metal plates and is eld in place by a third metal plate. You can bend the 4 metal tabs to remove the third. THIS IS THE INTERESTING PART. The swivel ball can not pass through the first two plates! The mirror arm can not pass through the back of the plastic housing! DO NOT GRAB THE PLIERS AT THIS POINT! You will have a desire to do so, grasp the swivel to see if the metal will unsrew from the mirror arm and emmediately you will have a broken peice of swivel firmly grasped in the jaws of the pliers and will have a verbal if not audible response! Not pretty. You next attempt will be to grab a flat head screw driver and remove the screw that spreads the 4 sections of the swivel ball to tighten the mirror. Remove the screw. You will then notice the design flaw of the 1800 rear view mirror. The swivel ball is permately fixed to the mirror arm. The only way to remove it is to chisel the flared edges of the post away and then press the post through the arm. This can be a very delicate thing to do without permately damaging the post/swivel.

This is my current state of mirror repair. Yes I made both an audible and most verbal sound after completely ripping the 4 sections of swivel ball from the post. I am currently seeking any others who have made this same error and have figured a way to solve it. I have heard of a "Later model Volvo Mirror" swivel ball and post that is not permately fixed to the mirror arm as is with my 1800. Any ideas?
