helping a friend..... where to start 700 1987

Hello,
So my even-less-mechanically-inclined-than-me friend is having some trouble with his 760 turbo. About a week ago the dummy lights started flickering while he was driving the car. I thought ignition switch or some kind of glitch in the steering column. I guess this was proved correct by the fact that it didn't seem to have an effect on the availible power IE his headlights didn't dim etc and the fact that his high beams acted as a kill switch. No other electronic on the car did much but flicking on the high beams turned the car right off. I could start the car with them on and turning them off would cause the car to turn off. So I figured it was either the ignition switch on something in the steering column. For reference he also has broken motor mounts and his exhaust is detached in about 3 places causing all types of rattles and clangs.

So. Today he was driving to work and his car started to stumble like he was running out of gas. He made it to work and turned the car off. It started right back up and ran like normal. He went back out at lunch and the car started up ran for a minute or two and he shut it off. It wouldn't start back up. About 4 hours later he went back with me and the car started up. It ran for about 3 minutes and shut itself off. I found that I could jump it and it would run for a couple of minutes and die. I at first thought maybe a fuel pump relay. I checked it and it seemed fine. I then thought maybe something wrong with his fuel mixture was causing it to flood the engine. Spark plugs confirmed he was running really rich. I just don't understand how jumping it would make it run. Belts are tight and it doesn't take much to jump the car; we didn't even turn my car on. Right now I think maybe his motor mounts and bad pipes are messing with the O2 sensor but that still doesn't explain why it would jump right?
Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jerry
