Loss of acceleration + very loud whooshing sound 200 1984

So today when I turned on my 244 there was a noticable clunking sound under it. Not thinking to much of it I started on my way and noticed it had a huge loss of power when I accelerated and it was making a loud whooshing sound like air letting out but it sounded more like one of those sprinkler systems that are installed in the ground. Like "sssshhhhhhhh!!". This happens whenever I push the gas pedal and gets louder the more I accelerate but goes away when I ease off the pedal. It doesn't do much accelerating either, especially when slightly floored. I'm sure there's some kind of leak but I'm not sure where to even start. I had my mechanic do some work a few months ago and he said I should get the breather box repaired but, yeah, I don't even know what that is. This should give you an idea of my mechanical smarts! ha-ha. I plan on taking it in next week but if it's something I can maybe fix that would be cool. Or if this could be a major problem I would at least like to know it.
thanks again all..
