Transmission/ starter problems on my 1979 244

My 1979 244/automatic starts fine most of the time, but sometimes, when i go to start it makes this terrible grinding sound. Its like when someones car is running and they forget that it is and go to start it again, its that sound. I have only had it happen when i am out running errands, stopping and going alot. And also after i start the car i can hear this "hrr "sound, like the starter gear is retracting. i don't know if that would have anything to do with the grinding noise. Do they make starter gears weaker then the fly wheel teeth? What I'm thinking is that there is a section of my flywheel with the teeth worn down, hopefully not, i would rather replace a starter then a flywheel. Any suggestion would be great, thanks
