Please Help!?! 200 1978

So using everyones advice, thank you all by the way, I went to drain the fuel tank. I drained it using the fuel pumps by connecting a hose to the output of the external pump, it worked for a minute and then went dry. Knowing that there was more fuel than that in the tank I decided to pop the plate open in the trunk and take a look inside. It seems that the intank pump sits in some type of compartment seperate from the other fuel in the tank and the other fuel cannot get to the pump, what is this? Also, it seems that I need a new fuel tank...The inside is terribly rusty, I mean when I pulled the sending unit out, it is covered in rust and and big chunks of rust particles. Went and got a flashlight to look in the tank, it is rusty and has rust particles all over the bottom, it still holds fuel fine and is not rusty on the outside. Car sat for 4-5 years and I guess that this is the result. So, Do I need a new fuel tank, or can I clean it some how? I am stuck!!
