Speedometer Cable Connectors 444-544

OK, now I have a problem, which requires a question:

My speedo cable has retracted itself back inside the housing and I can't get a grip on it to pull it out again.

Someone here will probably suggest that I crawl under the car and remove the bottom end of the housing so I can push the cable back out again.

I thought these cables must be like American cars, where there's a little gear on the bottom end so they can't slip down.

Anyone have a suggestion that will keep me from having to get under the car?
