1987 - 240 odometer repair 200

Thanks to all who responded to my odometer repair question earlier in the week. I finally studied all the responses and am confident in removing the instrument cluster. One final question before I begin the operation. Does it make sense that the trip odometer failed several months before the odometer? It may be that the trip odometer "failure" was something other than the "gear". As I now think about it, the trip odometer stopped Zeroing, by pushing the button, but may have continued to register mileage. Since some have suggested not resetting the trip odometer, maybe I should not worry about fixing it at the same time that I repair the likely broken gear. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.
