Hard starting when cold, but not >really< cold! 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 non turbo wagon with 180k.
I recently aquired a problem starting first thing in the morning.
It has not yet done this at any other time.
So far it seems only to happen when the temp is at or just above freezing.
If it's colder out it usually starts great.
I'm not sure if it's spark or fuel related, but my first guess is fuel.
When it's being difficult it does not fire at all until i let go of the key and then it coughs as if to tease me.
If i continue to crank and crank it will eventually cough and sputter it's way to just barely running.
This takes alot of cranking.
After starting and left to idle it will usually stall without warning.
It will start again with a little less difficulty.
What is the best way to diagnose the cold start system?

Thanks

Richam
