Interchangeable alternators? 200

Dear Brickers--

I've been thinking about salvaging my 1980 for parts (paint and rust and body ding issues add up to too much). Working up a list of everything that might be useful.

The 1980 has a 55(?) amp alternator. It's been swapped out to an internal voltage regulator. The current unit only has around 10k miles on it.

Can this fit my 1992 as an emergency spare? The 1992 has a 70-amp, but otherwise are they the same--mounting, pulley alignment, electrical hookups?

Ooh...The screw-type adjuster on the newer one--will that work with an older alternator?

I guess the same question applies to a PNP buy. Is there a year cutoff for compatibility with a 1992?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Doug Harvey
