89 745 pings 700 1989

I have an '89 740 wagon with B234F 16-valve. It pings (I think). I usually use Shell regular gas, but when I heard this rattle sound I replaced the spark plugs and switched to Shell premium, but the sound doesn't go away. The weird thing is, the sound happens when I'm nowhere near WOT. Anyway, the car is equiped with a knock sensor so the timing should be right on, there are probably carbon deposits in the combustion chambers (which could cause pinging, right?).

What else could be going on? How do I check the timing? How do I clean the deposits? If hot oil gets on the plug wires, could that cause pinging? (the plug tubes are filled with oil)

I've always got great advice from this list.
