fuel/control fuse blows 700 1989

My '89 740GL wagon (NA) crapped out on me for the first time today (oh the humiliation of towing) after 207k trouble free miles. It worked fine in the morning, then I went to start it in the evening, it started up for about 2-3 seconds and died, and it hasn't started since. It turns over fine, but no spark, no fuel because as soon as I get the key to the on position (not even turning the starter)fuse #1 fries. I've checked the basic ignition connections, cleaned and tightened all the fuse connectors. I'll get to the grounds in the morning, but before I start tearing into her I thought I'd check to see if any of you have experienced the same problem. I've already done an extensive search on the site. Seems like a tough one to diagnose considering as soon as I power her up, the fuse for the fuel, and the control unit is already blown. Any ideas? Anybody?
