problem: 740 lost brakes 700 1985

Hi,

I have a 1985 740GL with a strange brake problem. For 99% of the time the brakes works fine, however sometimes (and this is scary) the brakes are severely reduced. Even if I really step down on the pedal, the brakes are not able to lock the tires. When this occurs, the pedal feels as normal (does not go especially soft or hard). The brakes are usually restored to "normal" after such an incident. The problem seem to occur especially when I'm driving longer trips. I have also been able to provoke the situation by repeatingly pumping the pedal fast. I've replaced the brake hoses, bled the brakes and tested the vacuum, but the problem persists. Any ideas of what can be the problem? Thanks in advance.
