electric fan and where to put the temp sender/switch 140-160

We briefly discussed my electric fan setup in Kyle's thread about his pertronix ingnition, but now I have a question.

Right now its functional and working nicely, operated by a switch. I do have a temp sender/switch thinghy which I'd like to take care of the fan (instead of the manual switch). So I installed this switch in the return hose of the radiator. I tested the switch in boiling water, and it closed just before the water starts to boil. But on the car, the switch does not close up. When on the car, the temp dash gauge can run just about off the scale but the switch still does not close it's internal contacts.

Now my question is:
-should I get a different temp switch, which closes at a colder temp, or;
-should I just fit the switch in the supply hose to the radiator?

I'd say the switch should only turn on the fan when the water comming back from the radiotor is still too hot. Not when the water entering is too hot, since the radiator will take care of that in the first place. Only when the radiator's capacity is insufficient, the fan should come on.

What do you think? Any thoughts?
