B18 overdrive questions 120-130

Reverse with OD on runs very high risk of damaging the planetary gearset in there (some have been lucky, but why chance it?).

Torque in lower gears is not a huge issue, especially 3rd but it really is not useful in 1st or 2nd due to the ratios being close enough in the first place (no time to engage OD). Also, OD does not like to be engaged/disengaged under full power... tends to burn lining of cone clutch and "can" fracture it (very bad).

These boxes have some very small metering holes and a small pump to build hydraulic pressure to engage the cone clutch (and keep it from slipping). Best bet is to remove the sump and clean the grunge out of it and let the OD drain through it (for a few hours, after warming up tranny). Note the kaka. A general "slime" of particles is normal wear (that funny pad is a magnet). Larger bits are not good but likely from the tranny and not the OD itself (they share oil). The connection between the boxes is kinda high so all the tranny oil will not drain through the OD (and vise-versa).

The ability to tolerate many different fluids makes it possible to run ATF through the box for a time to flush out any metering holes that may be plugged. It also allows you to run heavier oils to "assist" an OD that may have a weak pump.

Some of the "snake-oils" used as a flush may be helpful but you are on your own on those (refuse to reccomend any) although I have had success with most (after loooong pondering at the local fix-it mart and reading of labels). I've even used kerosene for flushing but never in an OD tranny (and NEVER under load!).

There was once an extremely nice site through the Triumph club for the J-type but it was pulled recently (wish I'd cloned that one!) By the bye, if anyone can get a copy of it I'd be very happy, indeed!
