Extending oil change intervals 200 1982

Normally I change my oil every 6 months. I use Quaker State Synthetic 10-40. Car is used only for mostly neighborhood trips by my wife as I take train to work .Recently I had hernia surgery so it will be a while before I can do heavy work on car.Since it is due for an oil change this April 1st, How long can I extend the interval ? Another 2-3 months? Another 6 ? I would rather do it myself as I have seen to much incompetence on part of mechanics.Car now has 166K+ miles.
