Hard to start when running around town w/Check Engine Light 200 1991

When its warm out, which it is now starting to happen in LA, the brick becomes stubburn. So here is the deal: when out doing errands, after she warms up and i go in a store and come out she starts up, but the engine is sluggish/coughing, the check engine light is on, so i give her a little gas before i put it in drive (automatic) and all is fine. if i don;t give her a little gas, she might stall. so what am i looking at here, cause when i check the codes it comes back 1-1-1. thanks for your help in advance and hopefully this something simple.
