760 Turbo Idle problems 700

My 1987 760 turbo with 280k plus miles on it has trouble idling properly. The idle swings between 1,500 and 700 RPM and is almost never steady. When running the car doesn't have the power it used to and I'm not sure where to start. A friends suggested some fuel injector cleaner and maybe a new fuel filter. On a side note, the turbo gauge went out the other day and I'd love to fix it myself, but again, I'm not sure where to start.
