Spring & A/C compressors

In which a man's fancy turns to-- replacing a worn out A/C compressor.. I have an 89 740T, and the clutch is making noise. Further, the system is still old freon, so I am looking at my possibilities, and seeking advice. If I update the coolant, should I blow out the compressor, as the FAQ suggests, then change the clutch, or just get rebuild? And can I maybe put in a better compressor, like a rotary? I plan to install a variable orifice, BTW.

Thanks

R
