Swinging rev counter

A few days ago I posted a query about the wondering minimum RPM in my 745 b230f 1988 SW. Occasionaly it would set to 1300 rpm instead of 750. I thank all for the suggestions. We knew the injectors and ICV are clean, new seals and O sensor, full service, checked gounds. I could not find any vacuum leaks anywhere. It was suggestged I calibrate the TS and I did. Still it happened again this morning. In desperation I waked the instrument cluster and what do you know, the needle jumped right back where it is supposed to read, and then up again. Now reading 1300 rpm at idle. I connected and external RPM counter and that read 750. THEREFORE, IT WAS the INSTRUMENT. I was all set to dimantle half the intake side and replace the gasket in the manifold. So I guess we better remember that even diagnostic tools sometimes need diagnosing. Extra 740 rev counter anyone?
THANKS AGAIN, Andrea
